Exceptional senior housing around the world

We set off on a journey through four of the world's most distinctive Senior Houses, with features that are decidedly unusual for Italy.

We start in Japan, at the extraordinary Jikka Senior House. Surrounded by greenery, in a fairy-tale setting, it is a truly unusual reality. In this splendid agglomeration among the trees, designed without stairs to facilitate even the movement of guests in wheelchairs, there are 1900 square meters divided between private rooms and common areas in the name of comfort without unnecessary embellishment. The unusual shape of the Senior Housing's five units, with their cone-shaped roofs, recalls the mountain ranges it is surrounded by, and the use of wood harmonizes with the zelkova trees that grow luxuriantly in the area. The high ceilings not only bring an abundance of natural light into the space, but also symbolize old age, as the architect who oversaw the project explains.

Tamaraikulam Elders Village stands in India: the facility, supported by the nonprofit organization HelpAge, was established to help and accommodate the elderly affected by the 2004 tsunami. It currently makes life easier and more peaceful for eighty residents.

Changing scenery completely, here is Bethlehem Shores in New Zealand. The breathtaking view of a sunset over the sea is the icing on the cake of this Senior House where one lives like in a luxury resort. A spa, heated pool, gymnasium, ballroom and cinema room with all kinds of activities and amenities are available to privileged guests.

Our world tour of the most interesting and noteworthy Senior Housigs could only end in glittering New York City. On Manhattan's Upper West Side stands Atria West 86: the most luxurious property in the Big Apple. Here guests, moving among impeccable furnishings and delighted by gourmet cuisine, spend a five-star third age.
